History
In the 12th century, the temple was built by the Bhati Rajput ruler of Jaisalmer, Maharawal Lonkawat. Hinglaj Mata Goddess or Tanot Mata, who is considered to be a local incarnation of the Goddess Durga, is worshipped and believed in by local people because of her miracles. The temple witnessed the INDO-PAK WAR OF 1965, during which the Pakistan army fired 3000 bombs around the temple.
According to folklore, all bombs missed, and not a single one exploded. The temple was again attacked during 1971, and the attacking tanks were buried in the sand, allowing the Indian Air Force to destroy them. Vijay Stambha (Victory Tower) was built inside the temple compound to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Longewala. In the present day, the temple management is handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) of India.

Goddess Tanot Mata is known as Karni Mata who is believed to be the goddess of power & victory. Tanot Mata is an incarnation of goddess Hinglaj. According to folklore, there are many miraculous tales of Tanot aka Awad Mata. During both the 1965 and 1971 wars, the goddess didn’t let the Pakistani bomb tankers to explode & Indian soldiers, prepared for martyrdom and anticipating defeat, instead emerged victorious, defeating the Pakistani forces decisively. There is also saying that 3000 bombs were dropped close to the temple not a single one exploded. Tanot Mata serves as a symbol of faith, courage, and the enduring spirit of the people of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
Best Time To Visit
Winter season is the best time to visit the temple. You will find appropriate weather to experience it. If you are planning to visit the temple, then the best time to go is between the months of November and January.

By Air – The nearest airport is Jodhpur Airport. From the airport, the temple is 153 km away. You can book a cab; it’s a 2-hour journey.
By Train – The nearest railway station is Jaisalmer Railway Station . From the station, the temple is 123 km away. You can book a taxi; it’s a 2 hour journey
By Road – The best way to reach Tanot Temple is from Jaisalmer, which is 120 km away and takes around 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach.
Timing & Entry
Morning Time: Around 6 am, the temple is opened for devotees.
Evening Time: Closed by 8 pm after the evening aarti.
