Sommarøy, Norway: A picturesque fishing village in the Arctic
Sommaroy(also known as sommaroya,meaning summer-island) is a small but vibrant fishing village located in the Tromso Municipality of Troms county, Norway. Situated about 36 kilometers (22 miles) west of the city of Tromso, it’s a popular tourist destination known for its stunning white sandy beaches and breathtaking Arctic scenery. a stunning village in Northern Norway. A Life Without Schedules:
On Sommaroy, people play soccer at 2 a.m.,swim at 4 a.m, whenever they choose. Because here,time doesn’t rule life. Residents are petitioning to officially ignore time during the summer months, allowing for more flexible schedules and activities like cutting lawns at 4 am or painting houses at 2 am. The islanders believe that abolishing time would allow for a better quality of life, increased flexibility, and more time to enjoy the “midnight sun”.
Polar Day and Night:
This island experiences two months of complete darkness, followed by six months of endless daylight. The sun doesn’t set form 18 may to 26 july a full 69 days. During the summer months, you can experience upto 24hour of sunlight above the arctic circle. From November to January the sun doesn’t rise (polar Night). During polar night, the island is plunged into darkness, but it is also a time when the Northen light often visible. so,what use is a clock when the sun never sets?
Time Abolished By the People:
In june 2019 the 300 residents of Norwegian island of Sommaroy lunched a campaign to become the world first “Time-free Zone”. This initiative was primarily a marketing stunt to promote tourism, spearheaded by Innovation Norway, the government entity that oversees Visit Norway. The campaign aimed to abolish formal opening hours, allow residents to “do what they want, when they want,” and provide 24/7 flexibility. While the idea of a time-free zone on Sommarøy was initially presented as a genuine desire of the islanders, it was ultimately a marketing campaign designed to attract attention and visitors to the region.
