Magh Mela 2026 is a special and sacred festival that will take place in Prayagraj from January 3 to February 15, 2026.The city originally had the ancient name “Prayag,” which means “place of sacrifice” and refers to its location at the sacred Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati.Prayagraj was earlier called Allahabad. Significance
Kalpvas is a important tradition during Magh Mela where devotees stay near the Sangam for a whole month. During this time, they live simply and focus deeply on spirituality through daily rituals, prayers, meditation, and holy baths. They eat simple food and follow a disciplined lifestyle, avoiding distractions. This practice helps purify the soul, build self-discipline, and brings devotees closer to moksha (liberation). Kalpvas is like a spiritual retreat, giving people a chance to connect deeply with themselves and the divine.
🙏 Magh Mela 2026 Auspicious Key Bathing Dates (Snan Parva)
The Magh Mela is a month-long spiritual fair held annually at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. The Magh Mela 2026 is scheduled to be celebrated for 44 days. The entire period is considered auspicious for the holy bath, but specific dates are marked as highly sacred, drawing the largest crowds.
| Date (2026) | Day | Snan Parv (Festival) | Significance |
| January 3 | Saturday | Paush Purnima | Beginning of the Mela and start of the month-long ascetic vow, Kalpavas. |
| January 14 | Wednesday | Makar Sankranti | Marks the Sun’s shift into Capricorn (Makara). Believed to usher in blessings and virtue. |
| January 18 | Sunday | Mauni Amavasya | The Holiest Bathing Day. Millions gather to bathe while observing a vow of silence (Maun). |
| January 23 | Friday | Basant Panchami | The festival of spring and knowledge, dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. Devotees often wear yellow. |
| February 1 | Sunday | Maghi Purnima | The final important bath for most household pilgrims and the traditional end of Kalpavas. |
| February 15 | Sunday | Maha Shivratri | The final official bathing date, marking the conclusion of the Magh Mela. |
According to my personal experirnce balance peak days like Mauni Amavasya (Jan 18, 2026) is the busiest day. For a calmer, more personal experience, visit on a non-peak day. If you go on a main Snan day, be ready for the crowds and an extremely early start.
How to Reach Prayagraj
| Mode | Entry Point | Tip |
| Air | Prayagraj Airport (IXD) | Book flights well ahead. From the airport, take a pre-paid taxi to your accommodation or the Mela area (about 12–15 km). |
| Rail | Prayagraj Junction (PRYJ) | The most common way to arrive. Check for Mela Special Trains for extra routes. Be prepared for major crowds at the station. |
| Road | Bus/Taxi/Personal Car | The city is linked by major National Highways. On peak bathing days, vehicle entry to the Mela ground is restricted; use E-Rickshaws or walk the final distance. |
Accommodation & Booking Tips
From my personal point of view accommodation should be secured early due to the large crowds expected during the Mela period (usually January–February).
A. Tent/Camp Booking (The Mela Experience)
The Mela Authority establishes a temporary Tent City on the sandbanks of the Sangam. This is the authentic way to experience the Mela and the practice of Kalpavas (a month-long vow).
- Options: You will find a range from basic dormitory-style tents to private, weather-proof cottages with attached bathrooms.
- How to Book: Look for announcements and booking links from authorized private operators who set up camps, or check the official Prayagraj Mela Authority website (booking typically opens several months before the event).
B. Hotel & Guesthouse Booking (City Comfort)
For more traditional comfort, stay in the main city area.
- Hotels: Search for options near areas like Civil Lines.
- Booking Tip: Start checking for bookings at least 6 months in advance (around August/September 2025). Expect peak-season pricing and demand to be very high, especially around the main bathing dates (Shahi Snans).
💡 General Booking Summary
- Book Accommodation: Secure your stay at least 6 months prior (Sept/Oct 2025).
- Transport: Book train/plane tickets 4–6 months prior to get the best seats/fares.
- Verify: If booking a tent, confirm the operator is officially recognized by the Mela administration for safety and reliability.
